Charlotte, NC - The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (10-5; 7-3 SAC) was crowned South Atlantic Conference Co-Champion for the second consecutive season after a gritty 2-1 victory over Anderson (10-5-1; 5-4-1 SAC).
The theatrics started early on a chilly night with a goal in the opening 15 seconds on a penalty kick from junior defender
Michael Hornsby providing an early 1-0 advantage. The first half settled into a defensive stalemate until Anderson forward Alexander Cox-Ashwood tied it in the 36th minute to even the score before halftime.Â
Queens was the aggressor in the second half rattling off 10 shot attempts to Anderson's four. Queens knocked in the game-winning goal in the 66th minute with a connection between midfieldersÂ
Caio Brandao and
David Alvarez taking a 2-1 lead. Alvarez' goal was his team-leading eighth of the season and the Royals' stifling defensive performance and ball control paved their way toward a narrow victory.Â
Queens finished the 2019 regular season with a perfect home record winning all seven games played at Dickson field this season. For consecutive seasons, the Queens Royals are Co-Champions of the South Atlantic Conference, splitting the honor with Carson-Newman.Â
Queens has been named the No. 2 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Championships and will host Newberry College Saturday, November 9th at 4:30 p.m.Â
