CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Gavin Rains recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and
Van Turner Jr. scored a season-high 20 points, as the No. 11/12 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (6-1, 1-0 SAC) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Anderson University (3-2, 0-1 SAC), 78-74, on Tuesday night at the Levine Center. The win marked the Royals' 12
th consecutive victory in the series versus the Trojans.
In the first half, the Royals only led for 20 seconds, when the first of Turner's six made 3-point field goals dropped to put Queens in front, 6-5, just shy of four minutes in. The Royals trailed by as many as nine points but closed the first half on 6-0 run as a result of back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jermaine Patterson to pull within one, 32-31, at halftime.
In the second, after again trailing by three scores, Queens took its first second-half lead, 42-40, with 16:01 to play, after Turner compiled an individual 7-0 run which featured back-to-back 3's and his second four-point play of the night.
After relinquishing the lead moments later, and trailing by as many as six points, the Royals took the lead for good with 4:12 remaining when
Peanut Cunningham knocked down a pair of free throws to put Queens ahead, 65-64.
Despite not scoring from the field for the first time this season,
Daniel Carr went seven of eight from the free-throw line in the closing minutes to seal the victory.
Although neither side led by more than nine points, the game only featured five lead changes and six ties.
The Royals placed four players in double figures as Patterson scored 17 and Cunningham added 11. Queens shot 43.4 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from the 3-point line.
Quinn Nottingham led Anderson with a game-high 26 points. Josh Livingston followed with 18 and Shawn Benard scored seven. Queens held Anderson to 45.8-percent shooting and 25-percent 3-point shooting.
The Royals outrebounded the Trojans, 45-22, and pulled out the victory while overcoming a -10 turnover margin.
The Royals return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30, versus Lenoir-Rhyne University at the Levine Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
