CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Saturday at the Levine Center, the No. 11/12 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (7-1, 2-0 SAC) posted its best defensive performance of the season, holding Lenoir-Rhyne University (4-3, 0-2 SAC) to 34.8-percent shooting to earn an 82-68 victory.
Daniel Carr and
Jermaine Patterson led Queens with 17 points each.
Kenny Dye added a season-high 15 points and
Gavin Rains recorded his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
After the Royals jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, R.J. Gunn and Davion Bradford nailed consecutive 3-pointers that sparked a 10-0 LR run and put the Bears in front, 10-5, just over four minutes in. However, after the first media timeout, Queens scored the next six, capped by a jumper from
Peanut Cunningham that briefly gave the Royals a 12-10 lead with 11:54 remaining in the first.
In a first half that featured six lead changes, Queens seized control of the game with a 14-0 run capped by Patterson's second of three made 3-pointers, giving the Royals a 28-18 edge with 7:20 remaining in the frame. Queens led 40-34 at halftime.
The Royals opened the second half on a 6-0 individual run by Rains, stretching the lead to 12, 46-34, with 17:31 to play. Queens led for the entirety of the second half, expanding the lead to 20 points, 77-57, on a free throw by Rains with 4:30 left.
Queens shot 50.8 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from the free-throw line. The Royals outrebounded the Bears, 50-33, and outscored LR in the paint, 34-22.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by 20 points from Darius Simmons. Gunn, the team's leading scorer, was held to 10 points.
The Royals return to action on Saturday, Dec. 7, at ninth-ranked Lincoln Memorial University (8-1, 3-0 SAC). Opening tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
