AUGUSTA, GA. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2019-20 on Saturday evening, collecting a 67-61 victory over non-conference foe Augusta University on the road.
Queens (1-3) led 14-8 after the opening quarter of play and began the second period with a 3-pointer from freshman
Kelsey Leedle to extend the lead to a nine-point edge. However, the Jaguars (1-2) immediately answered with a 3-pointer of their own and outscored the Royals by an eight-point margin to carry a 29-27 lead into intermission.
The Augusta advantage stretched to four points after three quarters of action, but another Leedle 3-pointer opened the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to just one point. Leedle finished the night 3-for-5 from deep for nine points in 15 minutes of off the bench.
The lead changed hands five times in the final 10 minutes of action until a layup from junior
Caitlyn Moore tied the score at 56-all and sparked an 8-0 run that ended with Queens in front by a 62-56 score with 52 seconds remaining. Junior
Kristian Eanes and sophomores
Jaleah Goff and
Jaymi Golden combined to make 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Eanes led all player with 21 points, making 6-of-11 shots from the floor and 8-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe to go along with five steals on the defensive end of the floor.
Junior transfer
Julia Raflund scored a career-high 13 points and pulled down five rebounds, while Goff finished with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Moore filled up the stat sheet in 38 minutes of play, totaling 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Queens returns home on Wednesday, Nov. 20 to host Young Harris College at 6 p.m. The Royals will host Beds4Kids, a non-profit organization that provides beds for kids in need. Fans can donate new twin, full and queen bed sheets at the door to receive free admission into the game.
