Queens Suffers Tough Loss in Conference Finals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After defeating the Saints of Limestone College during the regular season twice, the Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team suffered a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of Limestone in the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Championship final this afternoon at Bessant Field bringing their impressive season to a close at 13-7.
 
Despite outshooting the Saints, 11-7, today, the Royals found themselves unlucky when it came to putting the ball in the back of the cage. Both teams finished play with four shots on goal apiece as Kelly Diplock led the Saints with three and Hanna Nechay led Queens with two. Additionally, the Royals earned nine penalty corners to Limestone's three.
 
With the score sitting tied at 0-0 coming out of the halftime break, Limestone's Alyssa Stubbs scored today's game winner off of a rebounded save in the 33rd minute of play. Queens' Nechay immediately responded putting a shot on goal in the 35th, but it would be turned away by Limestone' Daisy Ruhle.
 
In goal, Avian Thompson completed the game with three saves while Ruhle of the Saints totaled four.
 
Following the game, Casey Carrigan, Millie Eaton-Jones, and Mazvita Mtisi were named to the all-tournament team.

The Royals' 2019 season was one for the books as Queens picked up its first win over a ranked opponent during the regular season which was also highlighted by a nine-game win streak in conference play. Additionally, Queens won its first-ever South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship. Five Royals were also honored on the all-conference team while Queens head coach Brandi Kist earned Coach of the Year honors and Thompson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
