CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team served up nine aces, including five from junior
JayCee Jones, in picking up a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-17) sweep of Catawba College on Tuesday night inside Curry Arena.
The sweep was the second of the season for Queens over Catawba as the Royal hit .214 to improve to 15-4 overall and 12-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Indians were forced into a .062 hitting performance and fell to 5-12 overall with a 4-10 League mark.
Catawba got the first point of the match and led by a 16-13 score midway through the opening set before a
Logan Witt kill sparked the Royals to a 7-0 run that ended with Queens ahead 20-16. The Indians were able to close the gap to one point, but Queens ended the frame with four unanswered points to take a 1-0 match lead.
Aside from early 1-1 ties in both the second and third sets of action, Queens controlled the rest of the match en route to its eighth straight set sweep of the season.
Junior
Casey Tarvin, the two-time reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, led all players with 14 kills and had 10 digs for her 10
th double-double performance of the season. Senior setter
Mallory Swarts also had a double-double, her ninth of the year, with 34 assists and 12 digs.
Witt and fellow junior
Chanel Turner each had 10 kills and Turner chipped in 11 digs, while sophomore
Lindsay Elmore finished with eight kills and five total blocks to go along with a .467 hitting performance. In addition to her serving success, Jones registered 13 digs and sophomore
Brooke Farley tallied a match-high 16 digs of her own.
The Royals hit the road for their next two matches over the weekend beginning with a rare Thursday night matchup against Wingate University on October 24 at 7 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
