NEWBERRY, S.C. – Shaun Willett scored 26 points and set a career high with 19 rebounds, while
Lewis Diankulu posted his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, as the 13
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (14-2, 6-0 SAC) edged Newberry College (5-7, 1-4 SAC), 96-94, on Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena to claim its ninth straight victory.
The Wolves tied the score three times in the second half but led by Willett's NCAA-leading 13
th double-double, 18 points from
Daniel Carr, and 17 points from
Van Turner Jr., the Royals never trailed.
Queens jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first half when a three-point play by
Kevion Blaylock gave the Royals a 36-22 lead with 6:43 left in the first. However, trailing 38-24, Newberry countered with a 9-0 run capped by a Marquis Collins 3-pointer that cut the Queens lead to five, 38-33, with 4:02 remaining.
The Royals took a two-possession lead into halftime, 49-43.
In the second half, Newberry tied the score for the first time when an Angelo Sales Jr. layup tied the game, 70-70, with 10:07 to play. Moments later, when tied for the second time, 72-72, Queens used a 10-0 run that featured six points from Willett to momentarily seize control with an 82-72 edge with 8:08 to play.
Newberry responded with a 12-2 run that tied the game, 84-84, when Luke Gibson hit a three from the right wing with 5:42 left.
With 15 seconds left on the clock, a
Josh Brodowicz free throw gave Queens a 96-94 lead. Queens used one last defensive stop to win the game, after a missed three from Newberry's Tai Giger in the left corner with seven seconds remaining.
Sales led Newberry with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Marshall Lange followed with 23 points. Despite shooting just 39.2 percent from the field, and 29.4 percent from the 3-point line, Queens earned its seventh consecutive win in the series.
The Royals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12 versus Carson-Newman University at the Levine Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 and all Queens students will receive free admission with their Queens ID card. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
