CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind
Shaun Willett's NCAA-leading 14
th double-double and the first career double-double for
Daniel Carr, the 13
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (15-2, 7-0 SAC) edged Carson-Newman University, 81-77, on Saturday afternoon at the Levine Center. Despite shooting 13.6 percent from the 3-point line, and going 0-for-11 from three in the second half, the Royals picked up a 10
th consecutive victory to maintain sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference.
Willett finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds while shooting nine of 18 from the floor and six of 10 at the free throw. Carr grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds while scoring 16 points. The victory gave Queens a winning streak of at least 10 games for the fourth consecutive season.
Queens led for most of the first half but relinquished the lead late when Carson-Newman used an 11-0 run, capped by a Nick Rogers 3-pointer, to take a 41-37 lead with 52 seconds left in the half. The Eagles held a 41-39 advantage at halftime.
In the second, Carson-Newman led by seven points with 12:44 to play after another Rogers 3-pointer put the Eagles ahead, 61-54. However, Queens answered with a 10-2 run, capped by a Carr jumper in the paint on a fastbreak, that put the Royals in front, 64-63.
Queens led the rest of the way and stretched the lead to seven points with 1:07 remaining, as Willett's free throw put Queens up 75-68.
The Eagles were led by a game-high 26 points from Grant Teichmann. Rogers followed with 16 points.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Catawba College (13-2, 6-1 SAC) in a matchup of the first and second place teams in the conference standings. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
