ANDERSON, S.C. – Led by
Shaun Willett's NCAA-leading 18
th double-double, the No. 9/6 Queen University of Charlotte men's basketball team (19-2, 11-0 SAC) held off a second-half rally to defeat Anderson University (11-8, 5-6 SAC), 83-75, on Saturday at the Abney Athletic Center. Willett scored 22 points with 13 rebounds, while
Daniel Carr scored 18 points,
Lewis Diankulu scored 17, and
Kevion Blaylock grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds as the Royals picked up their 14
th consecutive victory.
The win over Anderson also marked the 11
th-straight victory in the series and extended the Royals' road winning streak to nine games, the third-longest active streak in Division II.
Queens grabbed a 15-point first-half lead, after
Van Turner Jr. knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner to put the Royals ahead, 38-23, with 3:52 left in the half. Queens took a 12-point lead into halftime, 44-32, after holding Anderson to 33.3-percent shooting from the floor and 16.7 3-point shooting in the first.
However, the Trojans opened the second half 7-for-8 from the field, and cut the deficit to four, 53-49, after Randall Shaw completed a three-point play with 14:06 left. Shaw finished with a game-high 23 points.
Moments later, four-straight points from Gage Ellis pulled the Trojans within two, 55-53, with 12:39 left. Anderson then took its only second-half lead, 64-63, with 8:01 left after Shawn Benard's layup.
Queens answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good, that featured four-straight fast break points from Carr, to take a 71-64 lead with 5:07 to play. Limited to six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, Carr scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half.
The Royals outrebounded the Trojans 40-23, with 12 offensive rebounds. Queens shot 49.1 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three, while Anderson shot 43.1 percent and 22.7 percent from distance.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday night at the Levine Center versus Lenoir-Rhyne University. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 and all students will receive free admission with their Queens ID card. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
