CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Shaun Willett scored a career-high 30 points, but plagued by turnovers the No. 9/6 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (19-3, 11-1 SAC) fell to Lenoir-Rhyne University (15-4, 8-3 SAC), 92-79, on Wednesday night at the Levine Center. Willett added nine rebounds as the loss put an end to the Royals' 14-game winning streak.
In the middle of the first half, Queens used a 10-1 run to jump out to an 11-point lead, 25-14. The scoring run featured 3-pointers from
Daniel Carr and
Van Turner Jr. and was capped by a layup from
Lewis Diankulu that gave Queens its largest lead of the game with 10:10 left in the first. Carr finished with 14 points and Diankulu recorded his sixth career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
However, Lenoir-Rhyne followed with 14 consecutive points and took a 28-25 lead with 5:13 left in the half on a Bertrand Awana layup. The run came as a result of six Queens turnovers and featured a four-point play by RJ Gunn after a made 3-pointer.
The Royals recaptured a 36-34 lead in the opening half's final minute, but LR's Davion Bradford turned a steal into a fastbreak dunk that tied the game at halftime, 36-36. In the first half, Queens turned the ball over 11 times.
In the second, after the Royals opened with turnovers on each of their first four possessions, the Bears grabbed a seven-point lead, with 14:32 to play, on a Djibrill Diallo jumper in the paint. After five-straight points from
Blake Morrow, Queens regained a 47-46 lead, with 12:24 left.
But Lenoir-Rhyne opened up a 67-53 lead with 6:35 to play after a 20-6 run that featured four made 3-pointers, including three from Darius Simmons. After shooting just 16.7 percent (2-12) from three in the first half, the Bears went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half and stretched the lead to as many as 18 points.
In total, Queens committed 20 turnovers and shot 48.3 percent from the field and 52.2 percent from the 3-point line. Lenoir Rhyne shot 51.5 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from distance. Emmanuel Wembi paced five Bears in double figures with 16 points.
The Royals return to action on Saturday at Lincoln Memorial University in a matchup the of the first and second place teams in the League. Opening tipoff from Tex Turner Arena is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
