No. 9/6 Queens Hosts Local Rival Wingate on Wednesday Night

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 9/6 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (17-2, 9-0 SAC) hosts local rival Wingate University (10-7, 6-3 SAC) on Wednesday night at the Levine Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Wednesday is #SetTheExpectation Night to raise awareness for the #SetTheExpectation campaign, which is dedicated to combating sexual and physical violence by supporting coaches, young men, and boys to become part of the solution through direct outreach and engagement in high school and collegiate athletic programs.

Wednesday is also Coaches vs. Cancer Night, as members of the Queens coaching staff will participate in Suits and Sneakers Week, a campaign to raise awareness and help save lives from cancer by raising funds and encouraging education about cancer prevention, screening, and early detection.

Queens and Wingate will meet for the 36th time, with the Royals holding a 21-14 all-time edge. Queens has won each of the last four meetings by an average of 19.3 points per. The Royals last lost to the Bulldogs, 86-79, on Feb. 8, 2017.

-Last time out, No. 10/6 Queens opened on a 21-3 run and cruised to a 98-69 road victory over Mars Hill University on Saturday at Chambers Gymnasium. Shaun Willett led Queens with 19 points and 10 rebounds as Daniel Carr also scored 19 with six rebounds and six assists. Lewis Diankulu scored 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds and Blake Morrow scored 14 points as well.

-Saturday's win stretched the Royals' winning streak to 12 games, giving Queens a winning streak of 12 games or more in each of the last four seasons. The current hot streak is the fourth-longest active winning streak in Division II. Queens last lost a game on Nov. 24, versus Belmont Abbey College, 76-55, at the Levine Center.

-Wednesday night's game marks the halfway point of the 20-game double-round-robbin schedule in the South Atlantic Conference. The Royals currently hold a two-game lead atop the League's standings, followed by Lincoln Memorial University (7-2) in second place, and three teams tied for third place (6-3).

-On Tuesday, Queens improved one spot to No. 9 in the NABC / Division II Rankings and held at No. 6 in the most recent edition of the D2SIDA Media Poll. The placement in the eighth official coaches' poll of the season, marks the 53rd consecutive week in which Queens has been featured in the poll dating back to Nov. 24, 2015, the first poll of the 2015-2016 season. The Royals have cracked the top-10 nationally in both polls during each of the last four seasons.

-With his 16th double-double on Saturday versus Mars Hill, Willett maintained his NCAA lead (more than 1,200 institutions) for double-doubles this season. At the Division II level, Kendrick Colvin of Emmanuel College and Will Vorhees of Notre Dame College are tied for second with 12 double-doubles. In Division I, Davontae Cacok of the University of North Carolina Wilmington has 14, and in Division III, two players are tied with 14.

-Willett was named AstroTurf SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 7-13, after averaging 25 points, 16 rebounds and one steal across two games. The award was Willett's first Player of the Week selection of his career, and the third time that a Queens player claimed the conference's weekly honor in five weeks.

-Bart Lundy was named HoopDirt.com NCAA Division II Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions for week nine of the college basketball season. Lundy led Queens to a perfect week with SAC wins over Newberry College, on the road, 96-94, on Jan. 9, and versus Carson-Newman University, 81-77, on Jan. 12, at the Levine Center.

-Willett was featured in SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Night, on Jan. 3, 2019, for a dunk that helped Queens to a 102-85 victory over Virginia Union University. The dunk, which was Willett's fourth of the game, was ranked No. 7 by ESPN. Willett became the second Queens player to ever appear in the nightly countdown by ESPN's flagship program. On Nov. 18, 2016, a dunk by Daniel Camps received the No. 9 ranking from ESPN's Top Plays in an 84-69 win over Lees-McRae College.

-Willett currently ranks fourth in the SAC in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per game. He is first in the League in rebounding, and third nationally, with 12.0 rebounds per game.

-Carr is seventh in the SAC in scoring (16.7 PPG), fifth in assists (4.8 APG), and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (45.4%).

-Diankulu is the League's fourth-leading rebounder with 7.8 boards per game and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (59.7%).

-Van Turner Jr. is fifth in 3-point shooting (45.5%) and his 66 made 3-pointers ranks him in atop the SAC and third nationally for most 3-point field goals made this season.

-As a team, Queens is shooting 50.8 percent (No. 12 NCAA, No. 1 SAC) and 41.3 percent from three (No. 11 NCAA, No. 1 SAC).

-Head Coach Bart Lundy is in his sixth season since returning to Queens and his 11th overall at the helm in Charlotte. In 17 years as a head coach in Division I and II, Lundy has posted an overall record of 345-170 (.669 win pct.) and a record at Queens of 249-83 (.749 win pct.). Lundy has led Queens to all three of its Elite Eight appearances.
 
Wingate Bulldogs (10-7, 6-3 SAC)

-Wingate is 10-7 overall, 6-3 in conference play and currently in a three-way tie for third place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with Lenoir-Rhyne University and Catawba College.

-The Bulldogs most recently lost to Tusculum University, 80-77, in overtime on Saturday. Wingate has won six of its last eight games.

-The Bulldogs are led by Marco Haskins who averages 19.5 points (No. 3 SAC) and 8.1 rebounds per game (No. 2 SAC) and ranks fourth in the SAC in 3-point shooting percentage (47.2%). Haskins is the only player to twice this season be named the SAC's Player of the Week, most recently receiving the award on Jan. 7.

-Bulldogs head coach Brian Good is in his 11th year at Wingate after spending four seasons as the head coach at Queens (2004-2008). Good holds an overall coaching record of 308-355 (.465 win pct.) in 24 years and a record at Wingate of 185-131 (.585 win pct.).
