CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team ended its five-game homestand on Friday night with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) sweep of Lees-McRae College inside Curry Arena.
The win was the first of the season for Queens (1-4) which hit a season-high .311 on offense and also tallied seven service aces, including three from sophomore outside
Josh Bragg.
Queens began the match with a 7-1 run to force a Lees-McRae (1-2) timeout and extended the lead to as large as seven points on four separate occasions. Consecutive kills from sophomore middle
Cody Nix gave Queens the opening set victory.
Lees-McRae held a brief 2-1 lead in the second frame before an 18-2 run by the Royals put the team in front by double digits. A service error by the Bobcats ended the set with Queens on top and moved the advantage to 2-0 in the match.
The beginning of the third set was once again close as the Bobcats were ahead by a 6-5 score until a kill from sophomore
Nic Cavallaro and a service ace from Nix gave Queens a lead it never relinquished. The Royals' largest lead came at 22-11 on a kill from sophomore
Tristan Santoyo as a Bobcat attack error brought the match to a close.
Santoyo led all players with 12 kills and hit .318 in the match to go along with four digs and two service aces, while Cavallaro chipped in eight kills and five digs of his own. Nix had five kills and three total blocks and sophomore
JP Payne was a perfect 5-for-5 from the middle. Senior
Alexander Schinzing totaled 27 assists in the match to guide the offense.
Queens has a week away from competition before heading to Gaffney, S.C. on Friday, January 25 to face Limestone College at 7 p.m. in the team's first road match of the season. The Royals return home the next day, Jan. 26, to host IVA conference foe Lincoln Memorial University at 4 p.m. inside the Levine Center.
