CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17-18), on Wednesday night to visiting King University (Tenn.) inside Curry Arena.
The Royals (0-4) opened the match on a 7-2 run behind two kills apiece from sophomore
Nic Cavallaro and
Tristan Santoyo. The Tornado (1-2) were able to respond with a run of their own and eventually tied the first set at 9-9 on a service ace.
Queens went back in front by a 14-11 score following consecutive kills from Santoyo and sophomore
JP Payne, however, a 6-1 run for King put the team ahead by two as they never relinquished the lead.
In the second set, Queens once again held an early lead at 6-4 after a Santoyo kill, but four unanswered Tornado points put King ahead by two. Following a brief tie at 9-all, King hit .405 as a team in the frame and captured an eight-point set win to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
King led from start to finish in the third and final set, hitting above the .300 mark to seal the road win. As a team, the Tornado hit .317 in the match, led by a match-high 14 kills and .312 hitting mark from outside Sean Kohlhase.
Cavallaro led the Royals with 12 kills and a .250 hitting percentage to along with five digs and three total blocks, while Santoyo followed with nine kills and five digs of his own. Graduate student
Alexander Schinzing turned in 24 assists and nine digs.
Queens continues its five-game homestand on Friday, January 18 when the team hosts Lees-McRae College at 7 p.m. in the Levine Center.
