Postgame Interview with Kenny Dye
SALISBURY, N.C. – Trailing by two with 13 seconds left,
Kenny Dye hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Royals ahead for good, as the No. 10/6 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (16-2, 8-0 SAC) edged No. 24 Catawba College (13-3, 6-2 SAC), 87-86, on Wednesday night at Goodman Gymnasium. The victory extended the Royals' current winning streak to 11 games, and gave Queens a two-game lead on first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings.
Shaun Willett led the Royals with 22 points and 10 rebounds to record his NCAA-leading 15
th double-double of the season.
Daniel Carr followed with 21 points,
Van Turner Jr. scored 13, and
Lewis Diankulu scored 11 while grabbing 9 rebounds.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw neither side lead by more than seven points, Catawba took a 43-36 lead into halftime, after an 18-6 run to close the first half.
Queens used a 9-2 run to open the second half that featured three Catawba turnovers and was capped by an offensive rebound and tip-in from Willett that tied the game, 45-45, with 16:13 to play.
The Indians quickly recovered and used a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 57-47, with 12:59 remaining. The run featured a three from Jameel Taylor and two made three's by Marcell Haskett. Haskett led Catawba with 21 points on seven of nine 3-point shooting, while Taylor finished with 19 points.
The Royals later recaptured the lead again when a Carr 3-pointer put Queens in front, 68-66, with 7:44 to go. The game featured 16 ties and 16 lead changes, and Dye's only 3-point attempt of the game gave Queens the final edge in the final minute.
With three seconds left, Turner took a charge against Taylor, and after a turnover on the inbounds pass, Queens held off two Catawba shots at the rim, to seal the victory.
For the game, the Royals shot 50 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from the 3-point line. The Indians shot 46.3 percent from the floor and 56.5 percent from three.
