MARS HILL, N.C. – The No. 10/6 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (17-2, 9-0 SAC) opened on a 21-3 run and cruised to a 98-69 road victory over Mars Hill University (6-9, 1-7 SAC) on Saturday at Chambers Gymnasium to pick up its 12
th consecutive victory.
Shaun Willett led Queens with 19 points and 10 rebounds to record his NCAA-leading 16
th double-double, as
Daniel Carr also scored 19 with six rebounds and six assists.
The opening run featured three made 3-pointers from Carr, as the junior guard poured in 11 of the team's first 21 points to give Queens an 18-point lead with 13:31 left in the first half. The Royals held the Lions without a field goal for 5:05 to open the game.
Mars Hill countered with a 7-0 run capped by a layup by Justen Hartfield that cut the Queens lead to 11, 21-10, with 11:53 left in the first. Hartfield led the Lions with 19 points.
MHU continued its pace, extending the run to 15-3, cutting the Queens lead to six, 24-18, with 8:36 left in the half, on a Hartfield fastbreak jumper in the paint.
Queens reopened its lead after
Blake Morrow scored nine of the Royals' final 15 first-half points, to take a 49-35 halftime lead. Morrow finished with 14 points.
Lewis Diankulu also scored 14 while grabbing eight rebounds.
The Royals played from in front the entire second half and stretched the lead to 31 points, 98-67, when
Jonathan Horodyski hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Queens its largest lead of the game with 57 seconds left.
For the game, the Royals shot 54.5 percent from the field, and 46.2 percent from the 3-point line. Queens held Mars Hill to 16.7-percent 3-point shooting while outrebounding MHU, 40-32.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday night versus Wingate University at the Levine Center. Tickets are $6 and all Queens students will receive free admission with their Queens ID. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
