Post-match Interview with Oliver Carias
Highlights
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After surrendering the game's first score, the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (3-1) trailed for only the second time all season. But when the final whistle sounded against Francis Marion (1-3) at Dickson Field, the Royals found themselves up by two on the scoreboard to capture their second-straight win and third win of the season.
Leading Queens on the pitch was
Omer Okyar. Okyar scored two goals, both on penalty kicks, including the go-ahead score in the 64th minute for his second goal of the game, giving the Royals a 3-2 advantage.
Once gaining the lead, Queens goalkeeper
Sebastian Kalk refused to let it slip. Kalk made back-to-back sensational saves to protect the one-goal lead, including one at point-blank range and the other with a diving effort to knock away a shot with his fingertips.
Kalk, the junior transfer, finished with four saves and improves to 3-1 in goal this season. He has yet to miss a single minute in net.
Alberto Morales then iced the game 88:26 into the contest when he freed himself in the box and beat Patriots' goalie Kristoffer Gregenaes for an unassisted goal, his second of the season.
Queens took a 2-1 lead almost immediately in the second half as
Keegan Burton headed home a cross from
Michael Hornsby into the upper-90 exactly two minutes in. For Burton, it was his first goal of the season and sixth as a Royal. The sophomore wreaked havoc on the offensive end all game long. His three shots were all legitimate scoring opportunities for Queens.
When it comes to taking crucial penalty kicks, the Royals feel more than comfortable sending out Okyar to capitalize. The senior has now converted on all eight penalty kick attempts in his fourth year at Queens. He also converted on a penalty kick in the final minutes of the first half to send the Royals into the break knotted at one goal apiece.
Queens outshot Francis Marion 13-11 and put eight shots on goal to FMU's seven. Morales led the Royals with four total shots. Each team was called for 10 fouls, and each team received two yellow cards in what turned into a hotly contested matchup.
Looking ahead, the Royals will open conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 12 on the road against Tusculum. That matchup is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
