GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Liam Doyle scored two goals,
Alberto Morales booted home the game-winning score with 17 ticks to play, and the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season after coming back from two scores down to beat Tusculum (2-3), 3-2, in its first conference game of the year.
Staring down overtime as the final minute ticked away, Queens intercepted a pass on the Tusculum end of the pitch and quickly turned it into a three-on-two break for one last opportunity on net. That's when the cross from Doyle, who scored the first two goals of the game for Queens, found
Alberto Morales on the far post, who knocked it home into the upper-90 to give the Royals the lead for the first time in the game with 17 seconds remaining.
As Pioneer players fell to the ground in defeat after giving up a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Royals celebrated, clinching their third consecutive win and fourth win in five games to begin the season.
Finding itself down 2-0 early in the first half, Queens battled back on the heels of Doyle, who scored the game's first two goals for Queens. Doyle first took a free kick from the very top of the box and buried it in the upper-right-90 in the 38th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, before striking home a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to tie the game at two goals apiece.
Doyle finished with two goals on two shots to go with the assist to Morales on the game-winner. For Morales, it was the senior's third goal of the season.
The three goals for Queens came on eight total shots, six of which went on goal. Tusculum also put six shots on goal, however did so on 14 shots. Queens goalkeeper
Sebastian Kalk made three saves on the night as he continues to flourish in net for the Royals.
After a postponement for this Saturday's game against Lincoln Memorial due to weather, the Royals will be back in action at home one week from now on Wednesday, Sept. 19 against Catawba College. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Dickson Field.
