CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team opened South Atlantic Conference Carolinas play today winning its first-ever league game 5-2 over Newberry College to move to 1-1 on the year. The Wolves now sit at 2-2 on the year and 1-2 in the league after the loss.

After falling behind 2-0 in the 25
th minute, Queens held the Wolves scoreless for the remainder of play while also putting five points on the board to secure the comeback win.

Queens' first goal came at the end of the first half after a foul was committed by Newberry inside the penalty circle. The Royals capitalized on the play as
Molly Walter scored her second career goal on an assist from
Jill Sherman to cut the Royals' deficit to one, 2-1, at the break.

In the second half, the Royals knotted the game at 2-2 when
Hanna Nechay found Sherman open in front of the net where she fired the ball into the back of the cage in the 43
rd.

Another penalty corner would lead to Queens' go-ahead goal in the 52
nd minute of action.
Karla von Ehren delivered the ball into play to
Paige Ramsey who stopped the ball just in front of
Mette Beekman allowing her to zip it into the net and put Queens in front, 3-2.

Just over a minute later Beekman returned the favor, squeaking a pass to von Ehren who had snuck into play after a penalty corner. Von Ehren then tapped the ball into the cage to give the home team a 4-2 lead.

Queens' final goal of the day came in the 65
th minute from
Millie Eaton-Jones. Walter was awarded the assist on the goal.

The Royals outshot Newberry, 20-4, putting 12 shots on goal to the Wolves' two shots on frame. Additionally, Queens dominated in penalty corners earned, recording 16 to Newberry's two. Three of the Royals' five goals were scored off of penalty corners.

Both
Lanie Walsh and
Jet van den Berg split time in the net with van den Berg taking the win. Walsh recorded two saves. Allison Davis took the loss in the cage for the Wolves after recording seven saves.

Queens is back in action on Sunday, September 16 on the road at Mansfield University. The nonconference game is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
