Post-match Interview with Oliver Carias
Highlights
CHARLOTTE –The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer (2-1) team took full advantage of its opportunity to make a good first impression for the home fans coming out to watch the home opener. The Royals scored early and scored often, downing Erskine 3-0 while picking up its second shutout in three games.
Senior forward
Alberto Morales and sophomore defenseman
Michael Hornsby both picked up their first goals of the season. Morales came close to scoring a second goal when his shot hit a member of the defense who tried to erase the scoring threat by forcing a corner. Instead, the Erskine defenseman put the ball past his own goalie for an own goal.
Queens put seven of its 13 shots on goal, while the stiff defense of the Royals allowed a season-low five shots, including three on goal. They have yet to allow double-digit shot attempts this season.
Behind junior goalkeeper
Sebastian Kalk, who made three saves against Erskine, Queens has stifled opponents this season while giving up only one goal through three games. That includes a double-overtime shutout to begin the season. So far, only No. 14 Limestone has been able to sneak the lone shot past Kalk.
Morales opened the night's scoring early on when he took a cross from sophomore defenseman
Will Martin and headed it home. It was the first points of the season for both Morales and Martin. The own goal then made it 2-0 in the 37th minute and was a result of freshman forward
Louis Goldsack finding Morales to set up a scoring chance inside the box.
Taking the two-goal advantage into the half, Queens added one more in the game's 68th minute when he bent in a left-footed free kick from the very top of the box around the wall of defensemen directly in front of him and past Fleet goalie Alex Pico. A perfectly placed shot, Pico found himself unable to make any sort of competitive attempt to knock the shot away.
Senior forward
Edmundo Robinson joined Morales with a team-leading three shots. Sophomores
Blake Baker and
Kieran Gore each placed a shot on goal.
Next up, Queens will remain in Charlotte for a matchup with Francis Marion on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. from Dickson Field. Francis Marion, 1-2 on the season, will come in off a 6-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan.
