HARTSVILLE, S.C. – After falling behind an early goal on the road to Coker, the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (6-1-1; 3-0) stormed back with a vengeance, downing the Cobras by a final score of 4-1 in a South Atlantic Conference duel from Coker Athletic Field.
Led by a hat trick and three-straight goals from senior
Adam Ward, the Royals offense went on a scoring rampage to end the first half, burying four goals within a span of 11 minutes to erase a one-goal deficit and ultimately extend a lead to three, all before the whistle could sound to end the first half.
With the win against the Coker, Queens' unbeaten streak improves to six consecutive games and has the squad 3-0 in conference play. Now sitting atop the conference, Queens is the only team in the SAC left undefeated against conference opponents.
Ward, who did not start the game, entered the game in the 33rd minute and became an immediate spark on offense. He scored his first goal within his first minute on the pitch, before following it up with two scores in under two minutes at the 40:57 and 42:53 marks in the first half. Senior
Edmundo Robinson assisted on two of Ward's goals, his first two assists of the season.
The hat trick from Ward was the first time a Queens player scored three goals in a game since Thiago Andrade did so on Nov. 11, 2013, the Royals' first year in the South Atlantic Conference.
Fellow senior Pedro Oliviera put home the game's fourth and final goal for Queens with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to cap off the four goals in 11 minutes. It was his second goal of the season and third goal overall as a member of the Royals.
Ward, who also came into the night with one goal, now leaves with a tie for the team-lead in goals scored with
Alberto Morales.
Royals' goalkeeper
Sebastian Kalk made a total of six saves on the night and picked up the win in goal. Queens edged Coker by one in total shots, 14-13, while the Cobras put seven shots on goal to the Royals' six.
Next up, Queens will play its second consecutive conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 3 against Anderson in Anderson, S.C. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
