HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Led by a six-run second inning in which 11 batters came to the plate, the No. 19 Queens University of Charlotte softball team picked up its 30th win of the season today against Coker College from Saleeby-Stokes Field.
The Royals defeated the Cobras in Game One by a final score of 8-3 before dropping the second leg of the doubleheader, 2-0.
Queens, who has won three of its last four, moves to 30-8 (7-5) on the season. That marks its first 30-win season since 2012 and its third since 2001, when it finished with 31 wins. The Royals have 10 regular season games remaining to best that win total, eight games of which come at home, where they currently boast an 8-1 record on the season.
Coker, also winners of three of four, now sits at 25-13 (4-6) on the year.
The Royals benefited from small ball en route to a big second inning in Game One, scoring six runs on three singles and two errors.
Kelly Winter and
Sydney Ditto both picked up RBI singles, while
Sara Ingoldsby drove home two with a single up the middle.
Abby Lathan added another RBI single in the fourth before
Jordan Hunt homered down the left field line, which was one of only two multi-base hits for Queens in the game. The other came on a double from Ditto and was her team-leading 15th this season.
For Hunt, it was her eighth home run of the year, which puts her tied for the team lead with Lathan. Lathan, who entered the day with five home runs in eight games, remained hot at the plate and has hit safely in four consecutive games.
For the second-straight doubleheader, both
Courtney Pearson and
Shannon McGuire went the distance in the circle for Queens. Pearson picked up the win in Game One to improve her record to 13-5. She allowed just two earned runs on seven hits, striking out nine, and limiting the Cobras to 3-20 (.150) from the plate with runners on base.
McGuire suffered the loss after pitching another gem, allowing only one earned run on five hits to go with five strikeouts. The loss marks only her second this year as she now possesses a 12-2 record.
The Royals will return to Park Road Park on Sunday for the beginning of an eight-game home stretch as the regular season winds down. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. against Limestone College.
