CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In its first of four consecutive home doubleheaders, the No. 22 Queens University of Charlotte softball team began its home stand with a series split against Limestone from Park Road Park. Â
Â
The Royals dropped a nail biter in Game One, a pitching duel that ended in a final score of 3-2, before bouncing back with a strong effort in Game Two to take a 9-6 victory.
Â
The Game Two win for Queens snapped a 14-game winning streak for Limestone. The Royals move to 31-9 (7-5) on the year while the Saints go to 26-9 (12-0).
Â
Abby Lathan and
Elaina Frantellizzi led the charge at the plate for Queens in the early stages of Game Two. Lathan hit a towering solo shot to left center in the bottom of the second inning, her team-leading ninth of the season, before Frantellizzi cut the Limestone lead to 4-3 in the third with a two-run blast of her own, her first of the season.
Â
Although they tallied just nine hits on the day, the Royals remained patient at the plate and amassed 15 combined walks over the two games, including eight in Game Two. Sparking the five-run fifth inning in Game Two, two of those walks came with the bases loaded.
Sara Ingoldsby's bases-loaded single then blew the score open to 8-4, giving the Royals a lead that they would not relinquish.
Â
Shannon McGuire picked up the win on four runs, two earned, in five innings to improve to 13-2 on the season.
Â
Despite taking the Game One loss,
Courtney Pearson (13-6) pitched one of the best games of her season. The pitcher kept Limestone scoreless for the final six innings of play after three unearned runs scored in the first inning. She allowed six hits and struck out six, only walking two.Â
Â
Jordan Hunt picked up both RBIs in today's first game with one coming off a solo home run to center field, her eighth of the season and second in three games.
Â
Courtney Smith, the Game One starter for Limestone, entered the day with a 0.77 ERA and improved to 16-2.
Â
Sabrina Martinez continued to wreak havoc on the base paths and stole four bases on the day to pad her team lead with 22.
