COLUMBIA, S.C.– The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team, ranked No. 15 in the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings, suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 10 Wingate University on Saturday afternoon in the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championship finale at the Cayce Tennis Center.
Queens, the tournament's top seed and winners of the last two tournament titles, held an early 2-1 lead after doubles play as the sophomore duo of
Agustin Aran Martin and
Sebastian Meum kicked things of with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Senior
Andor Vas and freshman
Kasper Rolfsen teamed together for an 8-4 win at No. 2 to collect the Royals' second point in doubles competition.
However, second-seeded Wingate started singles play with consecutive wins at No. 6, No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, to go in front by two points.
The Royals won the first sets in both the No. 2 and No. 3 matchups, but the Bulldogs finished off the match with a two-set victory at No. 4 to earn the tournament crown.
The Royals will now await the announcement of their seed, opponent and location of the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional held April 30-May 1. Queens is currently ranked as the fifth overall team in the latest Southeast Region Rankings.
