CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Abby Lathan went deep twice, and
Courtney Pearson and
Shannon McGuire combined to allow only three runs in two games as the No. 19 Queens University of Charlotte softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep in front of its home crowd today against Lincoln Memorial.
Queens took the win in Game One by a score of 6-2 before sealing the sweep with a dominant 7-1 victory in Game Two.
The Royals improve to 29-7 (6-4 in conference) while the Railsplitters fall to 19-13 (2-3). Queens continues its dominance at Park Road Park this season, boasting an 8-1 home record, already more than the seven home wins it had during the 2017 campaign.
Lathan continued her tear at the plate as she blasted two more home runs on the day, one in each game and her seventh and eighth on the season. In Game One, she led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to left field on the first pitch of the inning. In Game Two, she hit a laser over the wall in right-center, a two-run home run that extended the Royals' lead to six.
After going 22 games without hitting a home run, Lathan has recently found her power in a big way, homering five times in the last eight games.
In the circle, both Pearson and McGuire pitched lights out in complete-game performances en route to their 12th wins of the year. After a run scored in each of the first two innings, Pearson settled down and blanked the Railsplitters for the final five innings, finishing the contest with only one earned run on seven hits to match her seven strikeouts. Her record as the team's ace improves to 12-5 this season, while she lowered her ERA to 2.28.
McGuire surrendered a solo home run in the top of the second but nothing else as she gave up only five hits, while also striking out seven. After her Game Two gem, the freshman's record moves to 12-1.
After trailing 2-0 in the second inning of Game One, Queens rallied for three runs, all with two outs, beginning with a
Sara Ingoldsby RBI single through the middle of the infield.
Sydney Ditto followed it up with a two-run single through the left side to give the Royals a 3-2 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Ditto also tripled later in the game before scoring on a catcher's interference, putting the final run across the plate in the 6-2 win. It was her second triple of the season.
Queens wasted no time in Game Two jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run from
Madison Ackerman, her third on the season. Ingoldsby batted in another runner in the second inning, one of her four hits on the day, giving Queens a comfortable 4-1 lead.
Next up, the Royals will hit the road for their second-to-last road trip of the regular season as they head to Hartsville, S.C., for an April 3 doubleheader against Coker College beginning at 1 p.m.
