OFF THE BLOCK INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH JEREMY PRICE AND FRESHMAN NIC CAVALLARO
CHARLOTTTE, N.C. - Three separate players had at least nine kills and Queens hit .329 as a team, en route to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-11) sweep of Bluefield College on Thursday night in Curry Arena.
Queens (4-15) broke a seven-game losing streak with the victory and collected the program's first ever three-set win. Junior
Marco Vecellio paced the Royals with 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while freshman
Nic Cavallaro followed with 10 kills and no errors on just 15 attempts. Fellow freshman
Tristan Santoyo chipped in nine kills, a .368 hitting mark and 11 digs, as setter
Jack Mitchner tallied 29 assists.
The Royals opened the match with a 3-1 edge before Bluefield (5-12) took a brief 4-3 lead after a service ace and Queens attack error. The score was five times until a 6-0 run by Queens put the team ahead for good as the Royals cruised to a first set win. A brief 2-2 tied in the second set was the only resistance the Royals faced, leading by as large a margin as eight points in building a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third and final set of action saw Queens commit just one attack error and post a .632 hitting mark. The Royals led 18-9 following a Cavallaro kill and used a four-point service run from sophomore
Gregory Esquivel to build a lead that proved to be insurmountable.Â
Queens has a quick turnaround as the Royals host North Greenville University tomorrow in the Levine Center for a 7 p.m. matchup.
