CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (30-3, 18-2 SAC) will face No. 1-ranked Lincoln Memorial University (32-1, 20-0 SAC) on Tuesday night in the championship game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, beginning on March 20. Opening tipoff from Tex Turner Arena in Harrogate, Tennessee, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The second-seeded Royals earned their second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16 after defeating third-seeded the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, 75-63, in Sunday night's regional semifinals. The win gave Queens its 30
th win of the season, tying a program record for wins that was set last season. Queens is seeking its first Elite Eight appearance since the 2002-2003 season.
The top-seeded Railsplitters defeated fourth-seeded Clayton State University in the semis, 87-61, to earn their third straight trip to the Sweet 16. LMU has made the Elite Eight each of the previous two years.
Queens earned the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Regional after receiving an at-large selection to the tournament. This year marks the Royals third-straight NCAA tournament appearance and the 11
th total in the program's 30-year history.
Lincoln Memorial earned the No. 1 seed as the automatic qualifier from the South Atlantic Conference after winning the conference tournament title. LMU also won the league's regular-season crown, finishing 20-0 in SAC play and becoming just the second team ever to complete the conference's regular-season slate with an unblemished mark (LMU 2015-2016, 22-0).
Tuesday night will mark the fourth meeting of the season between the conference rivals, with LMU having won the first three. On Jan. 13
th at the Levine Center, then-No. 1 Queens squandered a 14-point lead and suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 5 Lincoln Memorial, 73-72, despite leading for more than 28 minutes. The loss put an end to a 16-game winning streak that tied program records for the longest winning streak and best start to a season.
In the second meeting on Feb. 24, in the final game of the regular season, the two teams meet as No. 1 and 2 in the national polls. The top-ranked Railsplitters won at home 80-65.
The third meeting came in the conference tournament championship game where Queens once again lost hold of a halftime lead and despite leading for more than 22 minutes, fell 77-75.
In eight meetings between Queens and Lincoln Memorial since the beginning of last season, six have been decided by one possession. LMU leads the all-time series 15-3 and is 7-0 at home.
Lincoln Memorial has ended Queens' season in each of the last three years, including in last year's Southeast Regional Championship Game when the Railsplitters prevailed 82-68. The Royals last beat the Railsplitters in the 2017 SAC Tournament Championship Game, 75-72.
