CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (29-3, 18-2 SAC) will face the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (27-5, 19-3 PBC) in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championships on Sunday afternoon. Opening tipoff from Tex Turner Arena on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The second-seeded Royals earned the trip to the regional semifinal after defeating seventh-seeded Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon, 90-69, in the quarterfinals.
Todd Withers led Queens with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds.
Ike Agusi and
Lewis Diankulu each scored 12 points.
Jalin Alexander and
Shaun Willett scored 10 apiece. The Royals led the Bobcats by as many as 31 points, holding them to 35-percent shooting, and 26 percent from the 3-point line while forcing 21 turnovers.
The third-seeded Braves earned their second-round trip after defeating fellow Peach Belt Conference foe No. 6 Francis Marion University, 75-72, on a buzzer-beater. After FMU's Brandon Parker hit a 3 to tie the game with seven seconds left, UNCP's David Strother connected from 25-feet away as time expired to propel the Braves to victory. James Murray-Boyles led UNCP with 15 points.
UNCP earned its NCAA Tournament berth as the automatic qualifier from its conference, after winning the Peach Belt Conference Tournament title with a 70-60 win over Clayton State University in the championship game. UNCP and Clayton State split the PBC regular-season title. The Braves are making their fifth tournament appearance in eight years, and are ranked No. 24 nationally in the D2SIDA media poll, and are receiving votes in the NABC coaches' poll.
The Royals earned the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Region after receiving an at-large selection to the tournament. Queens fell to top-seeded Lincoln Memorial, 77-75, in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship Game on Sunday, March 4. This marks the Royals third-straight NCAA tournament appearance and the 11
th total in the program's 30-year history.
With a win on Sunday, Queens will tie a program record for wins in a season with 30. Last year's team finished 30-4 overall while making the program's first Sweet 16 run since 2002-2003.
The Braves lead the all-time series with the Royals, 5-4, with Queens winning the most recent meeting, 69-61, at home in the Oven during the 2006-2007 season.
The winner will advance to face the winner Saturday's second regional semifinal between top-seeded Lincoln Memorial and fourth-seeded Clayton State.
