WILSON, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team saw its winning streak come to end Friday night as the Royals fell 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-11, 25-21) to Barton College inside Wilson Gymnasium.
Barton (6-6), the defending Conference Carolinas Champion and made an appearance in the NCAA Division I-II Tournament a season ago, hit .379 as a team and had 12 service aces on the night. In contrast, the Royals (3-9) were held to a .147 hitting mark but totaled five blocks.
The Bulldogs controlled the first set of action to take an early 1-0 lead in the match, but the Royals responded with a win in the second set to tie the match at 1-all.
In the second frame, Queens jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead behind a
Jake Dube service ace and a kills from
Tristan Santoyo. The score was tied nine times until the Bulldogs took a brief one-point lead as the Royals regained the lead at 19-18 on a Barton ball handling error.
The score was tied twice more before Barton used a service ace of its own and a Queens attacking error to take a 23-21 lead. However, Queens closed the set with four unanswered points, including two kills from freshman
Aleksandar Perisic, to earn the set victory.
Barton gained control once again in the third set to regain the match lead and carried its momentum into the fourth set of play. Queens led early at 2-0 before Barton rallied to build a lead as large a five points. The Royals were able to close the gap and trailed by just one point at 22-21, but the Bulldogs scored three consecutive points to seal the home win.
Perisic led the Royals offense with eight kills, followed by seven kills apiece from Santoyo and junior
Marco Vecellio. Dube finished the match with five kills and five digs, while freshman
Conner Nagaki led the defense with six digs.
Queens concludes its nine-game road trip tomorrow with a rematch against University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C. at 2 p.m. The Trojans earned a 3-1 victory over Queens earlier this season in the Levine Center.
