JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team fell victim to the top offense in the South Atlantic Conference in a 112-66 loss to No. 3 Carson-Newman University on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals (4-18, 1-15 SAC) were efficient as a whole on offense, making 28-of-54 shot attempts and pulling down 10 offensive rebounds. However, the Eagles (23-1, 15-1 SAC) shot 68 percent from the field and made 17-of-26 (65%) of its attempts from long range in the win.
Queens began the game with a three-pointer from freshman
Caitlyn Moore on the team's first possession and led 5-3 after a Moore jumper just two minutes into the contest. Carson-Newman responded with nine unanswered points and led by a nine-point margin at the end of one quarter.
The Eagles found their shooting stroke in the second quarter of play, building a lead of 44-24 midway through the period and claiming a 27-point edge at intermission.
The second half of play held much of the same as the first half as Carson-Newman shot over 70 from the floor in claiming its seventh straight win.
Junior
Lade Adepoju led the Royals with 20 points and remains the league's leading scorer after making 9-of-16 shot attempts. Senior
Mendy McNeese followed with 16 points of her own, while freshman
Kristian Eanes chipped in 12 points and matched a career-high with five assists.
The Royals return home to the Levine Center on Wednesday, February 14, to host Newberry College at 6 p.m. The game is recognized as the program's annual Play4Kay game as a part of a nationwide fundraiser for the Kay Yow Foundation, which is dedicated to helping extend and improve the lives of women who are battling cancer by raising money for research.
Throughout the month of February, all 11 SAC institutions will take part in the Play4Kay initiative as a collaborative effort to raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
On this night, Curry Arena will be dressed in all pink in honor of the game. Fans will be asked to wear pink to the game to show support towards women's cancer victims.
Queens Play4Kay shirts are now on sale, and all of the proceeds from t-shirt sales go directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. All shirts will be sold for $10 leading up to the Feb. 14 play date and will then increase to $12 on the day of the contest.
