Postgame Interview with Sarah Jansen
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte survived a late rally by the Jaguars of Augusta University to come away with a 68-62 win on Wednesday night inside Curry Arena.
The Royals improved to 4-3 overall and tallied their first win over a Peach Belt Conference school since defeating UNC Pembroke 56-55 on Nov. 19, 2011 in Charlotte. Queens won the rebounding battle 44-43 and forced the Jaguars (1-5) to single digits in both the first and third quarters of play in the victory.
Queens scored 13 unanswered points over the final 5:38 of the first quarter to build a 10-point lead. The advantage twice stretched to a 12-point margin in the second on layups from senior
Lade Adepoju as the Royals carried a 37-28 into halftime.
In the third quarter, Queens outscored Augusta 15-6 and lead by as many as 18 points, ending the period on a fastbreak layup from freshman
Jaleah Goff. The Jaguars cut the deficit to singles digits late in the final quarter of play, but Queens hit 9-of-12 free throws, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance by senior
Carolina Bernardeco, down the stretch to put the game away.
Adepoju led all players with 16 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for her third straight double-double to go along with two blocks at the rim. Bernardeco followed with a Queens career-high 13 points as well as six assists in 32 minutes.
Goff chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, making 8-of-12 free throw attempts, while fellow freshman
Jaymi Golden recorded 10 points of her own off of the bench.
The Royals return to South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, December 8, when they host Lincoln Memorial University at 2 p.m. Saturday's game is a White Out, all fans are encouraged to wear white, and the Queens Campus Union Board is sponsoring a t-shirt swap. Students who bring a t-shirt bearing the logo of another school will be able to trade it in for a Queens t-shirt or buy one for $5. All t-shirts collected by the Queens CUB will be donated to charity.
