CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Up by 14 points with 9:26 to play, the 25
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte (7-2, 2-0 SAC) men's basketball team held off a late rally to defeat Anderson University (4-3, 1-1 SAC), 79-77, on Saturday at the Levine Center, to pick up its sixth win in its last seven games.
Daniel Carr led Queens with 19 points, while
Shaun Willett recorded his seventh double-double in nine games with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Lewis Diankulu scored 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting to go along with six rebounds.
Kevion Blaylock secured a career-high eight rebounds.
The Royals shot 60 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from the 3-point line and 73.1 percent from the free throw line. Queens scored 42 of its points in the paint, held Anderson to 41-percent shooting and outrebounded the Trojans 36-26.
The Royals used an 8-0 run, bolstered by four-straight from Diankulu, to open up a 10-point lead, 28-18, at the 8:32 mark of the first half. However, Anderson countered with a 15-2 run to grab a 33-30 lead. Jeremy Bouton hit two 3-pointers during the stretch, and Andrew Boynton hit one. Bouton finished with nine points while Boynton scored 14 on a perfect four of four 3-point shooting.
Queens took a two-point lead into halftime, 40-38, and stretched that lead to nine, 61-52, after back-to-back three's from Carr and
Josh Brodowicz. The lead became 66-52 when Carr scored on a layup to cap a 13-0 run with 9:26 left.
Anderson clawed back and cut the Queens lead to one, 78-77, with six seconds left after Boynton hit an off-balance and contested 3-pointer from deep on the right wing. After being fouled on the inbounds pass, Carr hit the first of two free throws to give Queens a 79-77 lead with 2.3 seconds remaining.
At the buzzer, Anderson missed a half-court heave that would've won the game.
Shawn Benard led the Trojans with 22 points. Gage Ellis scored 17 and Josh Livingston scored 10.
