No. 25 Queens Jumps Out to Early Lead in Rout of Virginia Union

RICHMOND, Va.
Shaun Willett scored 21 points with 12 rebounds, to lead three Royals with at least 20 points, as the 25th -ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (8-2, 2-0 SAC), defeated Virginia Union University (3-4, 0-0 CIAA), 92-72, on Monday night at Barco-Stevens Hall in a non-conference matchup. Willet posted his eighth double-double in 10 games while Daniel Carr and Van Turner Jr. each scored 20 points apiece.

Queens jumped out to an early lead when Turner exploded for a 9-0 individual run on three-straight made three's to give Queens a 15-5 lead, with 14:56 left in the first half. He finished 6-for-11 from behind the arc.

After a timeout, the run expanded to 12-0 and was capped by a two-handed dunk from Jamari Smith that gave Queens a 19-5 lead with 13:47 remaining in the opening half. The Royals held the Panthers without a point for three minutes and 17 seconds.

The lead stretched to 20 points with 7:08 left in the first, when Lewis Diankulu scored four straight fastbreak points, giving Queens a 34-14 lead. Diankulu finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Moments later, at the 1:06 mark, the lead hit 25 points when Willett connected on a 3-pointer from the left corner putting the Royals ahead 47-22.

Virginia Union scored seven straight points to close the half, and Queens held a 47-29 lead at the break.

In the second half, the lead reached its peak of 26 points when a Willett layup gave the Royals a 71-45 lead with 8:54 to play. The Panthers never pulled closer than 15 points in the second half.

Queens held Virginia Union to 40.8-percent shooting from the floor and 16.7 percent from distance while shooting 55.7 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from three, and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. The Royals outrebounded the Panthers 37-28.

Virginia Union was led by 17 points from Demarius Pitts, as Raemaad Wright scored 11 and William Jenkins scored 10.
