CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a sweep of Newberry College and an upset of Anderson University (S.C.) in a five-set thriller over the weekend, the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team is set to open postseason play in the South Atlantic Conference Championships.
Queens (14-14, 10-10 SAC), the tournament's No. 6 seed, travels to Harrogate, Tennessee to take on third-seeded Lincoln Memorial University (18-8, 14-6) in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, November 6, at 7 p.m.
The Royals and Railsplitters met twice during the regular season with Lincoln Memorial claiming victory in both matches via identical 3-1 scores.
On September 14 in Harrogate, LMU tallied a .217 hitting mark and held Queens to a .094 hitting performance. On October 12 in Charlotte, the Railsplitters once again hit above the .200 mark (.243) in a road win. A bright spot for Queens across the two matches is the team's 16 total service aces. The Royals lead all conference teams with 180 total aces on the season.
Queens also leads the SAC in total digs, guided by sophomore libero
JayCee Jones, the reigning SAC AstroTurf Specialist of the Week, with 620 digs and 5.69 digs per set.
Two other Royals average more than four digs per set in sophomores
Casey Tarvin (4.44) and
Jordan Proszenyak (4.04), while Lincoln Memorial libero Erica Whiteaker ranks second in the league with 631 digs and 6.78 digs per set.
Offensively, Queens is led by Tarvin who leads the league in total kills (387) and kills per set (3.76), while fellow sophomore
Logan Witt ranks third with 296 kills from the middle. Proszenyak and sophomore
Chanel Turner provide added offensive power with 2.40 kills per set each, while junior setter
Mallory Swarts guides the offense with 7.20 assists per set in addition to 41 service aces.
Lincoln Memorial setter Emily Walter has put herself in the running for SAC Freshman of the Year with a 9.63 assists per set average, as right side Rylee Storm is the team's top offensive threat on the attack with 2.80 kills per set. Middle Tone Gill averages 2.09 kills per set and 1.13 blocks per set, a mark good enough to rank fourth in the league statistical standings.
