HICKORY, N.C. – Coming off a dramatic double-overtime victory its last time out, the No. 20 Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (7-2-1; 4-1) was unable to recover from an early two-goal deficit to Lenoir-Rhyne (6-3; 5-1), as the Royals' seven-game unbeaten streak was snapped by the Bears in a 3-2 final from Moretz Athletic Complex.
Twice trailing by two scores, Queens cut the Lenoir-Rhyne lead to one on two separate occasions, but ultimately fell short of evening the match as the Royals dropped their first contest in over a month.
For Queens, sophomore midfielder
Blake Baker and senior forward
Edmundo Robinson each found the back of the net to help the Royals get to within one goal of the Bears. Baker's unassisted goal in the 32nd minute was his first of the season and first as a Queens player. Robinson's goal in the 66th minute, which cut the lead to 3-2, was his team-leading fifth of the season.
The Bears scored in the seventh minute and again in the 27th minute for an early 2-0 advantage. They added a third goal in the 65th minute before Robinson immediately responded with a goal just over one minute later, however the Royals were unable to find an equalizer.
Coming into the match ranked 16th in the nation in total offense, Lenoir-Rhyne held the Queens attack in check, limiting it to nine shots and four on goal. Conversely, the Bears managed 15 shots and seven on goal. Royals' goalkeeper
Sebastian Kalk recorded seven saves.
After three consecutive matches on the road, next up the Royals will return home for a conference clash with Carson-Newman University at Dickson Field. That matchup is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
