CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After notching the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Co-Champion Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (10-5-1) suffered an upset defeat in the Quarterfinals of the SAC Championships.
Queens fell to Carson-Newman in the tournament's first round by a final score of 2-1 from Dickson Field in Charlotte.
It was an evenly played match between the two sides throughout the 90 minutes of play. The Royals edged the Eagles in shots, 16-14, while both teams finished with four shots on goal. Eagles' goalkeeper Twan Verweij finished with three saves, while Royals' keeper
Sebastian Kalk finished with two.
Carson-Newman jumped on the board first with a score from the 18 in the 25th minute. Needing a quick response, the explosive senior duo of
Edmundo Robinson and
Alberto Morales struck for Queens as Robinson connected with Morales who buried it in the right side of the goal for the equalizer.
The goal for Morales was his eighth of his season and put him in a tie with Robinson for the team lead, while the assist for Robinson marked his 22nd point of the 2018 campaign. The forward-duo combined for 16 goals and eight assists for a total of 40 points this season.
The lead remained knotted at one-goal apiece up until the 59th minute when C-N's Tobias Solem Karlsen scored his second goal of the match and the eventual game-winner.
Queens, who reached double-digit wins this season for the third time under head coach
Oliver Carias, will now await its fate in hopes of earning a spot in the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament.
