YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – After overcoming a one-goal deficit and scoring two-straight goals to take a lead, the No. 5 Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team surrendered two goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation as it fell to No. 4 Tusculum University, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Southeast Regional Championships.
As South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Co-Champions for the first time since 2013, the Royals finish the year with a record of 10-6-1.
Queens outshot Tusculum 11-9 on the night with both teams finishing with five shots on goal. Seniors came up big for the Royals and accounted for all five points scored.
Adam Ward scored first for the Royals on an assist for
Edmundo Robinson, followed by a penalty kick goal from
Liam Doyle. Goals from Ward and Doyle were each their fifth of the season.
The Pioneers wasted no time striking first as Henrique Devens scored at the 2:08 mark on an assist from Dario Ljubic. The lead lasted only a handful of minutes as the Royals quickly answered at 7:44 when Ward collected a cross from Robinson at the top of the box and lasered home a goal into the right corner of the net.
The score remained tied for over 60 minutes until a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Royals. Doyle, a Second-Team All-Conference selection, stepped up and buried it to take the lead for Queens to improve to four-for-four on the season on penalty kicks.
The Pioneers stuck back immediately when Devens put home his second goal of the match at 70:25. Then, with under ten minutes to play, Tusculum defenseman Georgios Charkoutsakis scored to put the Pioneers ahead for good with the game-winner as they went on to take the win, 3-2.
The loss ends one of the best seasons in recent memories for Queens, who won a share of the conference championship for the first time since 2013 and reached 10 wins for the third time under head coach
Oliver Carias. The Royals had four players earn SAC All-Conference First Team Honors, including Robinson, who won Player of the Year, while two others were selected to All-Conference Second Team.
