Queens Tops Coker for 6th Straight Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The Queens University of Charlotte women's field hockey team extended its win streak to a program-best six games this afternoon after picking up a 6-3 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas win over Coker College at Bessant Field. The win moves the Royals to 6-1 on the year and 4-0 in league play while the Cobras fall to 1-3 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
 
Freshman midfielder Karla von Ehren led the Royals in the victory recording the first hat trick of her collegiate career. Maha Clarke, Renee Smith, and Molly Walter each added a goal as well. Additionally, Jill Sherman, Mazvita Mtisi, Mette Beekman and Clarke recorded one assist each. In goal, Jet van den Berg collected her fourth win of the season after totaling two saves.
 
The Cobras got on the board first this afternoon finding a goal in the fifth minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Von Ehren answered for the Royals in the ninth to tie the game but Coker would score once more in the 21st to regain control of the lead, eventually taking the 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
 
In the second, Queens' Smith knotted things up again diving into the cage to score a goal in the 40th minute, but once more Coker responded to move back in front, 3-2. However, a goal from Clarke of Queens off of a penalty corner in the 45th tied the game for the last time and sparked a 4-0 run for the home team.
 
Von Ehren scored the game-winner in the 50th after receiving a pass from Beekman, and an insurance goal followed from her stick in the 65th to put the Royals on top, 5-3. The final goal of the day then came from Walter in the 70th off of a penalty corner opportunity.
 
Queens outshot Coker, 15-11, putting 11 shots on goal to the Cobras' seven shots on frame. Additionally, the Royals earned 13 penalty corners to Coker's six, scoring goals off of three.
 
Alyssa O'Toole led the Cobras today with four points on one goal and two assists. Kelsey Gibbons took the loss in the cage after recording five saves.
 
Queens will be on the road for its next pair of games traveling first to No. 6 Bloomsburg for a game on Sunday, October 7 at 11 a.m. The Royals opened their 2017 season at home against the Huskies falling 7-2.
