Post-match Interview with Sergio Lemus
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (9-3-1; 6-2 SAC) celebrated Senior Day on Saturday at Dickson Field. Fittingly enough, the Queens' seniors combined to score every point for the Royals in a 5-1 rout of the Newberry Wolves (3-10-2; 2-5-1 SAC) in a South Atlantic Conference showdown.
Alberto Morales and
Edmundo Robinson both scored twice,
Liam Doyle buried a penalty kick, and Morales, Doyle and goalkeeper
Sergio Lemus each tallied an assist for the Royals to cap off a full day of celebration for a senior group who has led Queens to one of its most successful seasons thus far in recent memory.
The Royals, who already lead the SAC in total points, goals scored and scoring offense, have now scored at least three goals in seven of their nine victories this season.
All in all, Queens outshot Newberry 19-6, including an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal.
Lemus, who made a sprawling, highlight-reel save at time ticked down in the first half, made his first start of the season on Saturday. He then manufactured one of the most memorable plays of the season for Queens, sending a booming pass down the ride sideline and past the defense to a streaking Robinson, who finished the play for a goal as teammates sprinted to surround and congratulate Lemus on the assist, his first-career point.
For Robinson, his two goals were his seventh and eighth this season, while Morales' two goals were his sixth and seventh. This places Robinson third in the SAC in goals and Morales fourth. Robinson, who has seven points combined in the last two matches, now has scored two or more points in five of the last six games and has scored at least one point in seven of the last eight.
The Royals are set to complete their regular season home schedule this Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. as Queens will face off in its final conference match against Lincoln Memorial.
