Highlights of Todd Withers
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– Former Queens University of Charlotte All-American
Todd Withers has signed a contract with the Grand Rapids Drive, the NBA G-League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, the team announced on Thursday. Withers becomes the first former Queens men's basketball player to sign a professional contract with an NBA organization or its G-League affiliate.
In his senior season at Queens, Withers was named an All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) becoming the first Royal to receive the honor since 2004. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, averaging 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He was also named a First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection, a Second-Team All-Region selection (D2CCCA) and an All-State selection (NCCSIA).
His performance helped propel Queens to its best season in program history. The 2017-2018 Royals went 32-4, compiling the program's best record, and won the Southeast Regional title to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship for the first time since 2003. With a win in the national quarterfinals behind a 26-point, seven-rebound and five-assist performance from Withers, Queens made its second all-time appearance in the national semifinals tying for the deepest postseason run in program history.
In his four years with the Royals, Withers scored 1,356 points, ranking him seventh all-time at Queens, and collected 766 rebounds, good for third all-time. In 113 career appearances (third all-time) and 95 starts, Withers compiled 15 double-doubles and twice recorded a career-high of 29 points in a game.
Led by Withers, the 2018 senior class posted a four-year record of 102-29 (.778 win pct.), and a mark of 62-8 (.886 win pct.) in its final two seasons, making it the winningest senior class in Queens basketball history.
"We are all very proud of Todd," said Royals head coach
Bart Lundy. "Four years ago, Queens was the only offer he had out of high school. Todd embraced our program and the University. He worked hard each day to get better and was the ultimate team player. Today he becomes a pro and is knocking on the door of the NBA. He is an awesome example that hard work and loyalty are still rewarded. The best part of Todd is that people at Queens will remember what a great person he is more than how good he is on the basketball court. Todd has a great opportunity and we will be with him as he chases his dreams."
