Postgame Interview with Todd Withers
Highlights
SALISBURY, N.C. – A triple from senior
Todd Withers with six seconds to go in overtime would lift the No. 3 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team past Catawba College on the road this evening. The Royals (19-1) improve to 11-1 in South Atlantic Conference play with the 89-86 win, while the Indians fall to 5-12 on the year and 2-10 in the league. With the season sweep of the Indians, Queens now leads the series, 13-4.
Â
Despite holding a 13-point lead towards the end of tonight's first half, the Royals found themselves in a tightly contested game with the Indians in the second half of play when they began struggling to put the ball in the basket. At 11:57 in the second, Catawba's Jerrin Morrison knocked down a three-pointer that cut the Royals' lead to four for the second time in tonight's game. A dunk from Morrison at 5:22 had pulled the Indians within four in the first half, but an 11-2 run by Queens followed giving the visiting Royals their largest lead of the night. However, the second half would play out differently as the Indians eventually knotted the game, 62-62, with 8:59 to play.
Â
A little over a minute after equalizing the score, Catawba moved in front by two, 66-64, on a lay-in from Jordan Barber. By 3:58 they had increased their lead to seven points, 76-69. However, a three-point play by Queens'
Ike Agusi would spark an 11-4 run capped by a steal and fastbreak layup from
Mike Davis that would send the Royals into their first overtime game of the season.
Â
Following a made layup by Barber of Catawba, Queens never led in tonight's overtime period despite tying things up twice. Withers' three-pointer with three seconds left to play would give the Royals their first lead since the clock read 7:53 in the second half while also keeping Queens' undefeated road game record intact at 9-0. Â Â
Â
Agusi led the Royals just a point shy of his career-high with 19 points. Davis added 18 points allowing the senior to pass the 1,500 career point mark. Davis also recorded eight rebounds while Withers totaled 16 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Additionally,
Shaun Willett added 13 points, five rebounds, and four steals off the bench and
Jalin Alexander recorded 11 points and five rebounds.
Â
Morrison of Catawba led all players on the floor with 26 points while Malik Constantine added 19 points. DJ Johnson added 15 points and Barber totaled 13 points.
Â
Queens will welcome Anderson University to Curry Arena on Saturday, Jan. 27 for homecoming. The Royals defeated the Trojans, 90-79, in the first meeting between the pair on Dec. 9, 2017.
Lewis Diankulu led the Royals with a career-high 20 points after connecting on 9-of-11 shots from the floor. He also totaled eight rebounds in the win. Willett recorded a double-double off the bench totaling 13 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Withers also scored 13 points while Agusi contributed 11 points. Alexander, Davis, and
Darryl White recorded 10 points each to give the Royals seven players in double-figure scoring on the night. The Royals lead the series with the Trojans, 27-9, and tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
