CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team collected its first win of the season and first win in history on Bessant Field this afternoon defeating Belmont Abbey College, 5-0. The Royals now sit at 1-3 on the year, while the Crusaders (4-1) get handed their first loss of the year.

After coming out of the break tied with the Crusaders, 0-0, the Royals saw their first goal of the game come from
Mazvita Mtisi in the 38
th minute when she deflected a ball from
Sta'sha Waterfield into the cage. The pair then teamed up once more in the 39
th when Mtisi found a pass from Waterfield in the circle to score her third goal of the year. Mtisi then picked up an assist in the 48
th minute on the Royals' third goal of the day which came from
Hayley Anna.

Goal number four for Queens was scored by
Renee Smith in the 52
nd minute when she collected a deflected ball in the circle and fired it into the back of the cage.
Jill Sherman then scored the Royals' final point of the day rebounding a saved shot in the 62
nd minute to give Queens a 5-0 lead.

The first half saw a combined eight total shots from both teams before ending in a 0-0 score. The Crusaders had a strong opportunity to score in the 22
nd minute turned away by
Korey Fine, who dove across the cage to make the team save. Â

Queens outshot Belmont Abbey, 14-8, putting 10 shots on goal to the Crusaders' five. Goalkeeper
Kelsey Fringer earned the first shutout of her career after totaling three saves.

The Royals will be right back in action tomorrow on the road when they face Newberry College at 2 p.m. Last season, the Royals and the Wolves split a pair of games during the regular season.
