CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team opened their season tonight in a tough match versus the Clayton State University Lakers walking away with a 2-1 win after a pair of goals in the second half.
After a 0-0 score at the break, Clayton State's Kwaku Dwamena scored the first goal of the game in the 71
st after receiving a pass from Tom Mitchinson.
Queens responded in the 80
th minute with a goal from
Keegan Burton which was followed 30 seconds later by another Royals goal from
Alberto Morales. Burton's goal from outside the 18 was a rocket into the back of the net, while Morales headed the ball into the net off of a rebounded shot. Queens then held onto the lead for the next 10 minutes to record their first ever win over Clayton State.
The action packed game consisted of five yellow cards, three for Queens and two for Clayton State. Burton,
Caio Maciel, and
Liam Doyle all received cards for the Royals while Dean Foster and Jesse Parsons of the Lakers also received cards.
The Royals outshot Clayton State 18-12 putting eight shots on goal to the Lakers' two. Queens goalkeeper
Ben Wallace collected the win after totaling one save.
The Royals return to Dickson Field on Sunday, September 3 when they will take on the Limestone College Saints for a nonconference match starting at 7:30 p.m.
