Royals Win Big over Coker to Remain Undefeated at Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (7-6, 5-3 SAC) hosted the Cobras from Coker College (3-9, 1-6 SAC) today in another South Atlantic Conference match-up, picking up a 22-9 win to snap their three-game skid. The win also keeps the Royals undefeated at home this season at 5-0.

Fourteen Royals scored for Queens in today's game as freshman attacker Justin Swick led the Royals with six goals on nine shots. Duncan Smith, Laszlo Henning, and Nick Sawyer each scored two goals and 10 others added one goal apiece.

The Cobras put themselves on the board first just four minutes into the game, with an unassisted goal from Patrick Timothee. He would add another goal to put the Cobras up 2-0 with 7:14 on the clock and Garrett Kilgore added one more to put Coker on top 3-0. Queens answered late in the period with two quick goals from both Nick Sawyer and Justin Swick to cut Coker's lead to one, 3-2, with 2:35 left in the quarter. Nick Carlson then added one more with just six seconds left on the clock to knot the game at 3-3.

Queens dominated in the second quarter outscoring the Cobras 8-1 to take an 11-4 lead at the half. Swick found the back of the net three times, while Laszlo Henning scored twice. Mike Bonerbo, Duncan Smith, and Eric Fitz also scored in the period.

Out of the break, Griffin Stechmiller put a point on the board just 30 seconds into the third quarter to extend the Royals' lead to eight, 12-4. Coker's Kilgore would score his second of the game shortly after, but Queens responded with another five goals to widen their lead to 12, 17-5. With three minutes left in the third, Coker found a pair of goals to make the score 17-7 heading into the fourth.

In the final 15 minutes of action Coker added to their score with a goal from Charles Stafford to close the margin to nine, 17-8, but once again Queens had an answer scoring as Reed Murphy and Tariek Harris scored two straight to increase the Royals' lead to 11, 19-8. Lucas Hediger would score another goal for Coker to try to get one final push started for the Cobras but a goal from Queens' Steven Swift at 5:32 moved the Royals ahead, even more, foiling his plans.

Sawyer and Sonny Smith added to final two goals of the day in the final three minutes to give the game its final score of 22-9.

After trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, Queens would outscore the Cobras 22-6 in the remaining minutes to come out victorious this afternoon. Queens outshot the Cobras 56-29 and totaled 50 groundballs to Coker's 24. Goalkeeper Anthony Valenza walked away with the win recording three saves while Kyle Hornik also saw time in the goal tallying five saves of his own.

Kilgore finished with a hat trick to lead Coker, while goalkeeper Anthony Malik totaled seven saves in the loss. Travis Pereira also spent time in the cage totaling six saves.

Queens will be back in action on Saturday, April 22 when they host No. 11 Mount Olive for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
