CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (8-6, 5-3 SAC) hosted the University of Mount Olive (10-4), ranked 12
th in the nation, for Senior Day defeating the Trojans 11-10.
Six Royals scored for Queens as freshman
Justin Swick led the Royals with four goals off of seven shots. Both
Nick Sawyer and
Nick Carlson would each score two goals and
Laszlo Henning,
Duncan Smith, and
Eric Fitz each netted one.
The Royals put themselves on the board first just four minutes into the game, with a goal from Carlson. Mount Olive would answer with a goal from Thatcher Clark a minute and a half later to tie up the score, 1-1. The two teams then traded goals again to knot the score at 2-2 with 7:49 on the clock before Swick found the back of the net with nine seconds left in the period to give Queens a 3-2 lead heading into the second.
Swick would add his second of the game off an assist from Carlson to put the Royals up 4-2 on the Trojans to start the second period. That score remained 4-2 until both Nicholas Correra and Jacob Ball of Mount Olive each scored unassisted goals seconds before halftime to equalize things at 4-4 at the break.
Neither team would score in the first seven minutes of play to start off the second half. However, the Trojans would see some action first as Brett Kingston put the ball in the net to put Mount Olive on top, 5-4. Shortly after, Swick would net his third of the game at 6:59, but another from Kingston would put his team back in front, 6-5, with 4:34 on the clock. Adding to the Mount Olive lead was Clark at 3:38 to give the game a 7-5 score going into the final 15 minutes of action.
Kingston would extend the Trojans' lead with a quick goal at 14:05 in the fourth, but Queens soon caught fire scoring four consecutive goals to take a 9-8 lead with 11:43 to play. Mount Olive tied things up at 9-9 with nine minutes left in regulation, but Queens' Sawyer had an answer at 6:45 to put the Royals back on top. Ball of the Trojans tied the game once more with a goal at 2:28, but once again Sawyer would come to the rescue putting the game away with a goal with just 24 seconds on the clock.
Queens was outshot 41-34 this afternoon, putting 17 shots on goal to Mount Olive's 22. The Royals won the ground ball battle, 33-22. Senior
Jonathan Paige won 14-of-24 face-offs and grabbed a team-high 11 ground balls. Goalkeeper
Anthony Valenza walked away with the win in goal and 12 saves after recording four clutch saves in the fourth period.
Mount Olive was led by both Brett Kingston and Thatcher Clark who recorded three goals each in the loss. Goalkeeper Will Urban totaled six saves in the cage.

Dylan Casper, prior to the start of today's game.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they host a quarterfinal round game in the South Atlantic Conference Championships.
