Raleigh, N.C. – In the last day of the Shaw Tournament, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team (14-9) split the day, suffering a first game loss to Mansfield University (4-1) at 6-5 before rallying for a 20-0, five inning, win against Virginia State University (3-8). The Royals would hold a 4-1 record in the tournament in addition to scoring a total of 50 runs in the three-day event.

The 20 run win was the first for the Royals since 2006 when Queens defeated Salem State 20-0. The team also ties for third in the nations for most runs in a single game, this season.

In the second match-up of the day against Virginia State, Queens dominated the score board, putting up six runs in the second inning. The Royals would see scores from
Alyssa Strickler,
Elaina Frantellizzi,
Kelly Winter,
Breanna Martinez,
Evie Scott, and
Abby Lathan, respectively, in the at bat to take a 6-0 start.

The hot hitting continued for the Royals in the third as they dominantly added another 10 runs to the scoresheet. B. Martinez and Winter secured their second trip around the bases, coming home off an error from the center fielder. Scott crossed home plate off a walk while
Sydney Ditto scored on an error at shortstop. Sanford and Lathan added back-to-back runs with Sanford crossing home thanks to a single from Strickler and Lathan racing to score on a wild pitch. S. Martienz added her name to the list thanks to a hit from
Allison Lopez, her first hit of her college career. Strickler, Lopez and Scott rounded out the ending with runs to make it a 16-0 game.

After a three-up three-down at bat for the Trojans, Queens posted four runs, coming from Strickler, B. Martinez, Winter, and Lopez to end the game.

Evie Scott (W, 5-2) would pitch for Queens, recording six strikeouts as well as seeing zero hits in the 15 batters she faced. The Royals would record 18 RBI's and would see at least one hit from nine out of the 11 players who saw time in the batter's box.

Prior in the day, Queens suffered a one run loss to Mansfield, who was quick to put runs on the board in the first inning. With bases loaded, Laura Lawson homered to center field, bringing her teammates around the plates for a grand slam.

Queens put themselves on the board with a run in the bottom of the second as Lathan recorded her third homerun of the season to make the score 4-1. However, the Mounties posted another run in the fourth with a single from Rachael Sterner to bring in Dashae Jones before adding a solo homerun from Anastasia Hester in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Queens got the bats swinging adding runs from Lathan, B. Martinez,
Hanna Hasker, and Ditto to make the score 6-5, but could not find the tying run as the game concluded.

Courtney Pearson (L, 9-6) saw time in the circle for the Royals, seeing eight hits and recording seven strikeouts.

Arianna Young (W, 3-0) and Sierra Storm would pitch for the Mounties seeing 12 hits combined. Storm would record one strikeout.

The Royals return home to host the University of South Carolina-Aiken at Park Road Park on Tuesday, March 7. The first pitch is set for 3 P.M
