GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team defeated Wingate University this evening in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Semifinals, winning 71-59. The win improves the Royals, who rank No. 10 in the NABC Poll, to 27-3 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 20-10. Queens advances to SAC Championship Sunday for the first time in program history with the win.
Queens was led by
Todd Withers who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Daniel Camps added 15 points and nine rebounds, while
Ike Agusi totaled 14 points, five assists, and three steals.
Mike Davis chipped in with 11 points.
The Royals held a 42-21 lead at the half after leading by as much as 25 points during the opening period. Queens used a 17-4 run to build their initial lead before maintaining with a 44.4-percent clip. Wingate was held to 21.7-percent shooting connecting on just 5-of-23 shots from the floor. Additionally, 15 of Queens' points were scored off of the Bulldogs' 12 turnovers. Withers led the Royals at the break with 12 points.
The Bulldogs cut Queens' lead to 12 points, 42-30, in the second half, but that was as close as the Royals would allow them to get as they quickly responded with a 14-4 run to increase their lead to 20. They then went up by as much as 31 points before the final horn sounded.
Wingate, held to just 26.5-percent shooting in tonight's game, was led by Mike Baez who scored 14 points. Keith Griffin added 10 points.
The Royals will face Lincoln Memorial University tomorrow at 4 p.m. Queens and the Railsplitters split the home-and-home series during the regular season. The pair also shared the SAC Regular Season Title.
