Queens Tops Railsplitters for SAC Championship Title

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (28-3) hit another historical mark this season winning the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament this afternoon, defeating No. 4/9 Lincoln Memorial University (26-5) by a score of 75-72. The conference championship tournament title is the first for the Royals since joining the league. It is also the first conference tournament title since the 1998-99 season.

The No. 7/10 Royals were led by senior forward Daniel Camps who totaled a new career-high 29 points in the win. Camps connected on 11-of-17 shots from the floor and 7-of-9 free-throws on the day. Ike Agusi added 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Mike Davis totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Jalin Alexander chipped in with nine points and Jared Hendryx tallied seven points. Todd Withers led under the glass with nine rebounds, while Hendryx totaled six boards.

Today's matchup between the Royals and the Railsplitters was no different than the previous meetings during the regular season, featuring 10 lead changes and seven ties. The tightly contested game could have gone either way, but the Royals managed to stay ahead of LMU down the stretch knocking down the baskets when they counted the most.

Following a pair of free-throws from Alexander that put the Royals ahead 61-58 with 8:34 to play, LMU's Deshawn Patterson got hot knocking down a pair of triples to give the Railsplitters a 64-61 lead with 7:44 to play. Out of the media timeout that followed, Agusi would put the Royals back in the lead with a foul shot and a three-pointer, and a jumper from Davis followed to give Queens a 67-65 lead with 6:18 to play. The three-pointer from Agusi was the first for Queens in the game.

The Royals kept control until a tip-in from LMU's Chris Perry put the Railsplitters in front by one, 72-71. However, they would not stay in front for long as Agusi went on to score the last four points of the game for Queens, moving the Royals in front, 75-72, with 1:18 to play. A turnover by the Railsplitters then returned possession to the Royals who dribbled the clock down to just two seconds thanks to a huge offensive board from Davis.

The Railsplitters had a chance to knot the game in the closing seconds, but a decision to foul before the shot by Queens Head Coach Bart Lundy proved to work in the Royals' favor as Emanuel Terry missed from the charity stripe.

The turnover late in the game for LMU wasn't their first as they accumulated 16 in the game which Queens was able to convert into 18 points throughout the game.

Perry led the Railsplitters with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Luquon Choice added 15 points. Cornelius Taylor and Patterson each finished with 13 points.

Following the win, Camps was named MVP of the SAC Championships, while Agusi and Withers also made appearances on the all-tournament team.

The SAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions will wait to see if they get the nod to host the regionals when the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship selection show airs tonight at 10:30 p.m. This year will mark the Royals' 10th NCAA appearance.
