ANDERSON, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte closed out its three-match road trip with a huge 7-2 victory at Anderson University on Saturday, March 25 at the AU Tennis Complex.
Queens (8-1, 6-0) kept its unblemished mark in league play with a dominant but hard-fought showing against a "talented" Anderson (13-4, 3-3) team.
"Our guys competed well today," said head coach
Billy Boykin. "Anderson is a talented team, and they made us earn everything. We are proud of our team."
The Royals made their mark early as they grinded out all three points in doubles action.
Paolo Bompieri and
Andor Vas got a tight 8-6 victory over the AU No. 1 team of Nicolas Ascarrunz and Jeffery Dayton. Then the No. 2 duo of
Giovanni Setti and
Sebastian Meum went the distance in 9-7 thriller over Ignacio Bideain and Fabricio Lanza.
Only the doubles third flight was relatively easy as
Jules Athalis and
Joel Dunlap won 8-4.
Singles play was just as tense as four different matches went into a third set, and two went into tiebreakers.
First,
Jules Athalis took down Ignacio Bidegain 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the top flight, and
Agustin Aran Martin won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 match.
Giovanni Setti then made his mark at No. 5 where he held off Fabricio Lanza, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6. The lone third-set match the Royals didn't win was at No. 6 where
Zachary Williams lost a nail biter (4-6, 6-2, 10-7).
Queens' other win came in the second fight where
Paolo Bompieri cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
The Royals will finally return home this upcoming Tuesday, March 28 as they host nearby rival Catawba College.
