WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis program will remain undefeated in league play as they came out with a 5-4 victory at No. 42 Wingate University on Wednesday, March 22.
In a battle of the region's eighth and ninth-ranked teams, it was the Royals (7-1, 5-0) who earned the key intra-conference and in-region road victory. The win also gave QU sole possession of first place in the SAC.
The key for Queens' victory over the Bulldogs (9-3, 5-1) came in doubles action. It was there that the QU No. 1 team of
Paolo Bompieri and
Andor Vas took down the WU pairing of Daniel Belsito and Josh DuToit, 8-3. Then the No. 3 duo
Jules Athalis and
Joel Dunlap got a key 8-2 win over Theo Dessacs and Duncan Addison.
With the two points in hand, Queens only needed to split singles to earn the road victory. The Royals got just that as
Jules Athalis (6-3, 6-3),
Giovanni Setti (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and
Zachary Williams (6-4, 7-5) won at the No.1, No. 5 and No. 6 fights, respectively.
The Royals' three-match road odyssey comes to an end this weekend as they head to Anderson Unviersity on Saturday, March 25.
