JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Queens University of Charlotte (14-15, 0-2) was unable to find any offense as they dropped a doubleheader at Carson-Newman University (21-7, 2-0) in the conference opener for both programs on Sunday, March 19.
Game One: Carson-Newman 8, Queens 0 (Five Innings)
After both teams left runners in scoring position in the first inning, Carson-Newman found some two-out magic in the second frame when Katie Pritchett hit a solo shot over the left field fence.Â
The Eagles came right back an inning later as once again they found some life with two outs already registered in the frame. This time, an error opened the floodgates as they pushed across four runs. Cheyenne Boles' two-RBI single to centerfield was the highlight of the scoring.
Queens finally tallied its first hit of the afternoon in the fourth inning when
Sabrina Martinez executed a bunt in between the second and first baseman. Unfortunately, the Royals struck out in the next at bat, and Martinez was called out trying to steal second to end the opportunity.Â
After two quick outs again to begin the fifth inning, Carson-Newman put the game away as Allison Webster hit a two-out three-run homerun to centerfield.Â
QU attempted to keep the game alive in the bottom of the frame when
Kelly Winter hit a one-out single down the right field line, but C-N starting pitcher Lacie Rinus sat the next two Royals down in order to close out the game.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 9, Queens 1 (Five Innings)
The second game of the doubleheader really got underway in the second inning when C-N's Cheynne Boles led the frame off with a walk. After a sac bunt moved her onto second base, Ashlyn Cooper lined a triple to centerfield to clear the bases and put the Eagles up 1-0.
Carson-Newman then went back to work in the third inning as Kristen Toppel led the frame off with a solo homerun to right-centerfield. Three batters later, Lacie Rinus drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI single. Katie Pritchett then capped the scoring with her second homerun of the day – this time a two-run shot.
The Eagles then added four more runs in the fourth inning when KaraLynne Levi had a two-run double down the leftfield line and Boles had a two-RBI single to leftfield a few batters later to open up a 9-0 advantage.
Queens finally found its offensive footing in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Kelly Winter led the frame off with a single to right field.
Evie Scott then came right in behind her and put the Royals on the scoreboard with a RBI triple to right field.
QU then put runners on the corners with no outs when pinch hitter
Allison Lopez walked on four pitches. Unfortunately, that would be it for the Royals as they hit into a double play followed by a groundout to extinguish the rally attempt.
Up Next
The Royals will look to get back on track this upcoming Wednesday when they head to Coker College for a doubleheader in Hartsville, S.C.
